Sharps disposal management involves the safe handling and disposal of needles, lancets, and other sharp objects to prevent injury and contamination. Proper management includes using designated sharps containers, which are puncture-resistant and clearly labeled, to collect used sharps. These containers should be sealed and disposed of through regulated waste disposal services. Healthcare facilities and individuals should follow local regulations and guidelines to ensure that sharps are managed safely and effectively, minimizing risks to both people and the environment. Regular training and education on proper disposal techniques are also essential components of effective sharps disposal management.
NEIE MWS offers a free consultation for a personalized sharps disposal management plan from full-service to self-service plans. On-site technicians are also available.
Biohazard Regulated Medical Waste Disposal
Biomedical Regulated Medical Waste
Regulated medical waste (RMW), also known as ‘biohazardous’ waste or 'infectious medical’ waste, is the portion of the waste stream that may be contaminated by blood, body fluids or other potentially infectious materials, thus posing a significant risk of transmitting infection.
RMW includes items like contaminated sharps, blood-soaked materials, and used medical equipment. Disposal methods include incineration, autoclaving (steam sterilization), and chemical treatment. Compliance with local, state, and federal regulations is crucial to ensure safe and effective disposal practices.
Trace-Chemotherapeutic & Pathological Waste
Pathological and trace chemotherapy waste disposal involves the specialized handling and treatment of medical waste through incineration. Pathological waste includes human and animal tissues, organs, and body parts. It requires careful containment and is typically incinerated or treated using high-temperature processes to ensure that all potential pathogens are destroyed.
Trace-Chemotherapeutic waste are materials that have come into contact with or may contain only a residual amount of a chemotherapy agent. This includes empty drug bottles or IV bags, as well as gloves and other PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) used during administering chemotherapy drugs. Trace chemotherapy waste is transported and treated as regulated medical waste but must be incinerated.
